“It’s about working with people toward progress, not politics.”
Mayor Stewart has lived in New Britain all his life. He is a graduate from New Britain High School in 1979 and began working his way through the University of Hartford on an academic scholarship while working as an electronics technician in the nuclear power industry at Electro Mechanics in New Britain.
He eventually earned his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Hartford in 2003. Along the way, he married his high school sweetheart, Patricia Badolato and had two children, Erin (22) and Kevin (18). Tim graduated with honors and is a member of the electrical engineering honors society at the University of Hartford. While working at Electro Mechanics, Stewart took the New Britain firefighters exam. In 1985 he was hired at the age of 23 to work for the New Britain Fire Department. He served 19 years as a member of the fire department, finishing his career as a fire inspector.
Tim’s uncle, former democratic state representative, Marc Bordiere sparked his interest in politics, and Tim registered as a democrat at the age of 18. Stewart became a Republican when Linda Blogoslawski ran for Mayor in 1993. After Blogoslawski defeated Lucian Pawlak, she appointed Stewart as a city plan commissioner. Stewart was then elected to a four-year term on the school board in 1995, serving as its vice chairman. Tim was elected as alderman in 1999, then again in 2000, when he served as Minority Leader. Stewart’s claim to fame in politics was in 2003, when he upset a heavily favored four term incumbent, Lucian Pawlak, for mayor. Since Mayor Stewart was elected on the issue of fiscal stability, the mill rate has not risen in six consecutive years under his leadership.
